About the event

Calligrapher Lahsen Azougaye 3 Calligraphy Workshop

Arabic script is known as one of the most beautiful in the world, but also one of the most complex.

There are many different ways of writing Arabic, and many are challenging. Arabic script is often seen in mosques and at many historic Islamic sites. When speaking about calligraphy in connection with the Arabic language, we should more precisely speak of “Islamic calligraphy”, since Islam has profoundly shaped this art of writing.

It is rare to find a culture with such a close connection

between religion, language and writing. Lahsen Azougaye introduced everyone interested to Arabic calligraphy and the art of writing.

Lahsen Azougaye was born in Rabat, Morocco. He studied psychoanalysis and art at the University of Vincennes in Paris. After his studies, he moved to Germany and became self-employed. Since 1983, he has worked as an independent artist in Oriental plasterwork, Arabic calligraphy and other fields.

Participants had to be able to write Arabic to attend the workshop. They were excited and motivated to receive an introduction to Arabic calligraphy. Alongside the theory, there was a practical section that particularly interested the participants and allowed them to try different tools and styles of script.
